Gum disease is very important because it is an active infection in the body. The body infection can lead to heart disease through the inflammation that it introduces into the bloodstream, so it's very important to get that under control. The way we treat it in our office is we get the patient back. We numb them up so that they're very comfortable. We use a piezo scaler, so we can get down deep underneath the gums and remove any infection that's present.
When we first begin periodontal therapy, we see the patient every three to four weeks. Once we get them comfortable and under control, then we shift into a three-month recall. After the periodontal treatment, it becomes a partnership between them and us. We have to make sure that they can do the things at home to maintain their care that's through, say, a Sonicare toothbrush that we recommend. Flossing through a Waterpik. There are several different modes that they have to do to make sure that everything is successful.
Believe it or not, around 3 out of 4 people have some form of gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, but only 3 percent of people seek treatment for it. But gum health is linked to your overall health, so there’s good reason to put yourself in the minority and give us a call! Other advantages of treating your gum disease include:
- Stopping and preventing mouth pain
- Preserving your natural teeth
- Protecting your jawbone from erosion
- Preventing bacteria from entering your bloodstream
- Enjoying fresher breath

Protect Your Smile And Your Nerves With The Latest In Dental Technology
You may think surgery is the only solution to gum disease. That’s far from the case! At Patrick Stuckey, D.D.S., we offer a treatment that requires zero surgery: scaling and root planing. You might hear us refer to this as periodontal or “perio” therapy.
- Scaling your teeth is a type of deep cleaning that will remove plaque, tartar, bacteria, and toxins from the surfaces of your teeth and roots, even under your gumline.
- Root planing will smooth out all the rough surfaces of your roots. Like the polish your enamel gets from a dental cleaning, planing will make your roots too smooth for bacteria or plaque to cling to them.
By using scaling and root planing to thoroughly clean your teeth, we can keep your gum disease in check and protect your smile. And our use of a Piezo Ultrasonic Scaler means a more comfortable experience than you would get with traditional dental tools.
If your gums are red, bleeding, or both, call our Ruston, LA office today at 318-255-8648 for our expert gum disease treatment.
